A NOTE ON : WE THE PEOPLE / COMMUNITY
As AFROPUNK expands further with the first outing in JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, the theme for 2017 is WE THE PEOPLE; a phrase that begins both the American and South African constitutions. The move to SA is a natural fit in line with AFROPUNK's desire to connect through Diaspora; creating bonds between those with a shared mindset. From the neighbourhoods of NY, through to U.S. and Europe, and now in yet another continent, this AFROPUNK mindset is less concerned with genres and pigeonholes than the strength and unity of otherness.
AFROPUNK LONDON ALSO YEAR ON YEAR TO CREATE AN AFROPUNK ARMY, a dedicated team of volunteers who give their time in exchange for a ticket, as well as working with ROCKCORPS, global pro social organisation, and BIGGA FISH social enterprise, who create the AFROPUNK Street team.
AFROPUNK, long known as an advocate of cultural change, will continue to keep affordable paid as well as earned ticket programs active, even as the brand expands from its Brooklyn roots into the global arena.AFROPUNK ARMY gives fans the opportunity to volunteer for admittance. AFROPUNK works closely with partners to provide volunteer activities and projects for fans to complete in exchange for a ticket to the festival.
For the second year in a row, AFROPUNK will partner with RockCorps, a global pro social organisation that harnesses the power of music to inspire people to volunteer. This collaboration between AFROPUNK ARMY and RockCorps sees two platforms coming together, sharing the same point of view of how powerful music is to connect communities. Volunteers bring focus to issues around social justice while feeling empowered to translate their ideas into positive action. Sistren, a podcast, radio show and creative collective consisting of 4 Queer African-British sister-friends from London, will be on hand to participate in the service project, engaging volunteers in meaningful dialogue around social activism and community building.
Through an innovative partnership with Bigga Fish, a social enterprise providing a performance and educational platform in events and marketing management for young creatives ages 14 to 25, hundreds of youth signed up as brand ambassadors for the AFROPUNK Street Team program. In addition to learning valuable, transferable skills, all program participants will receive tickets to attend AFROPUNK London 2017.
