New York, NY -- Jan. 17, 2017 -- Amy Guess is a passionate artist. On her new EP, Ten Times Out of Ten, her warm, open voice moves between tearful, dramatic pleas and quiet expressions of devotion. She has an impressive vocal range that brings a touching honesty to life’s darker moments. “I like peeling back layers that you don’t even know are there, to unlock something real,” Guess says. “When I’m singing or writing, I go deep. I can have an implosion and, even though it’s a healing experience, it can be heavy to go through.”

Her striking vocals and introspective lyrics have made Guess a sought after collaborator on the EDM scene. She’s written and performed on topline tracks for Myon, Paris Blohm and, most recently, Nolan Van Lith, whose “All To Myelf” is currently getting hundreds of thousands of hits. “I love collaborating,” Guess says. “I’m always reaching out to other artists. Every experience makes my music more honest and alive.”

Ten Times Out of Ten was recorded with Dove Award winning producer Rusty Varenkamp. His soaring keyboard arrangements compliment the fervent, honest vocals Guess delivers. They’ve been working together since “Moonlight,” a track that went viral on YouTube. “The songs we’ve written since then are richer, more realistic and anthemic,” Guess says.

The album opens with the festive title track.  Varenkamp’s bubbly synthesizer line, quiet chiming guitars and a funky backbeat compliment a celebratory, open-hearted vocal. “It’s heavy, but happy,” Guess says.

On “Think of Me,” Guess considers distressing attachments, whispering a prayer for reconciliation against a background of jittery keyboards that suggest a racing heart, before letting loose with a wailing cry that’s intensified by a loud, thumping EDM interlude. “The vocal was done in one take, in a hotel room on a computer, the day we wrote the song,” Guess says. “The energetic ad lib intensifies the yearning of the verses.”

An anxious sigh opens “Late Night,” a description of the struggle between fear and security. Varenkamp’s subtle synthesizer pulse takes on a cinematic sweep for the chorus. “Sometimes, the most crazy, messed up anxieties overwhelm you,” Guess says. “You have to relax and let it all go. I express those feelings by contrasting heavy verses with an inspiring chorus.” Themes of obsession and compulsion give “Comatose” a somber mood. Ghostly guitars float through waves of sinister synthesizer as Guess delivers a taut vocal. “You know some people are bad for you, but you can’t resist, even though you know it’s going to hurt you.”

The songs on Ten Times Out of Ten always come back to one basic truth: love is the only thing that allows us to transcend ourselves. “This album is about perseverance,” Guess explains. “To get to what you love, you have to push through the difficulties.”

Ten Times Out of Ten is available on Friday, Jan. 20. Amy Guess plays The Mint in Los Angeles on March 6th!
