Awakenings x Adam Beyer presents DRUMCODE ADE [Event Review]

Given that it was the first time attending Amsterdam Dance Event, however, it was not the first time attending an Awakenings event. Although it was the first time attending Awakenings during ADE, this year they hosted seven unique events at the notorious Gashouder. On Thursday, October 18th, it was the night for Awakenings x Adam Beyer presents DRUMCODE. The completely sold out show was packed with devoted Drumcode techno lovers from all corners of the Earth.

It was a cold and clear night, ready to dance the night away. Walking to Gashouder and seeing the outside of the space was intense and massive. My body filling up with excitement not knowing what to expect inside my heart-racing a mile a minute. First off, the staff at Gashouder were extremely friendly and helpful. If you were carrying the giant ADE bag like me then you would have to check it in a locker for only 10 EUR. After shedding off all the outerwear it was time to dance.

Stepping and gazing into the lights and production it was absolutely breathtaking. The circular dome-like space was filled with techno lovers from all over the world. Along with a bar, there was a merchandise tent as well as a massage table in case you danced too hard and pulled a muscle. Towards the end of Gashouder, there were bleachers for more people to stand and get a better view of the entire space, above it was the Awakenings sign.

Techno titan Enrico Sangiuliano was on the decks, giving a dark and powerful performance. Playing tracks from his debut album, Biomorph such as Symbiosis and Hidden. When Enrico dropped his most popular track Astral Projection, everyone lost it, the entire Gashouder roared with excitement from hearing one of Drumcode’s most successful songs. Enrico Sangiuliano gave an outstanding performance dark, raw, and moving.

It was now time for the master that created Awakenings and Drumcode label - Adam Beyer. When his name was announced my heart almost exploded with excitement. Drumcode label boss opened up with Loco & Jam - The Fog, having an excellent view of the entire place from the bleachers it was time to dance. Within 10 minutes into his set the infamous firework show was set in motion. All around the ceiling fireworks shooting around Gashouder, everyone cheers from the excitement. Tears of joy streaming down from my face, a euphoric feeling of release. Everyone cheered when the fireworks were shooting across the ceiling.

It was hot as hell inside from the Adam Beyer’s epic two hour set with tracks from Wehbba - Steamroller, New York’s techno artist Avision’s Get It Right, even threw in some Robert Hood. Everyone was lost it when Adam Beyer played one of techno’s hottest tracks of the year, Your Mind - screams coming from all over Gashouder. Adam Beyer continued with his set with more dark tracks including Teach Me, Julian Jeweil’s Futura, and closed out with Loop. Out of all the times seeing Adam Beyer at multiple shows, both at warehouses and festivals his ADE performance was one of the best ever. Was it because of Gashouder? Or maybe because of the crowd or the incredible vibes, perhaps the music and production - it could be all of it combined.

After that night Gashouder officially became the new techno haven, throughout the remaining of Amsterdam Dance Event I would refer it as the techno temple. When leaving Gashouder I was already counting down the hours for the next event.

Paul Kalkbrenner's Back to the Future will present remixes and mashups of techno classics that he himself grew up with, and it comes in association with Monumental Productions, who are also behind the world class Awakenings, and also recently performed at Awakenings Festival in The Netherlands. The techno legend has been top of the global techno world for years. He is not just a popular artist within the scene but has lots of fans outside it as his music can easily be called groundbreaking. Some years ago Kalkbrenner started the mixtape series Back to the Future.

The music I've found and will use during Back to the Future is music that hasn't only changed Berlin, but also other capitals of electronic music, such as Amsterdam. The second half of the eighties and the first half of the nineties have been pivotal and decisive for me and for the entire European techno scene. ADE and Awakenings are also committed to techno culture and history, which is why I can't wish for a better stage for Back to the Future” - Paul Kalkbrenner.
