Interview: Jaw Gems On The Rise

Joann: So you describe your genre as drip hop/ rachet jazz, what exactly puts you in those categories?

Jaw Gems: We didn't really fit into a genre so we made those up. Its a little trip and its pretty unorthadox so we just tried to create a label that expressed in words what we were creating with music.

Joann: Besides keyboards and music what are some of your other interests?

Jaw Gems: We're pretty obsessed with those two things but we also really like science and aliens.

Joann: Aside from your influences like Flying Lotus and J Dilla (to name a few), what did you grow up listening to?

Jaw Gems: We all grew up listening to different genres, from classical to heavy metal and still listen to everything in between.

Joann:  Congrats on snagging a spot at the Matrix Music Festival! Who are you most excited to see/play with?

Jaw Gems: Its a smaller festival and we're friends with just about all of the other acts so we'sre looking forward to seeing everybody and taking it all in.

Joann: What makes Matrix Fest different from other venues you've played?

This is the first Matrix Music Festival so we don't really know what to expect.

Joann: Has your style changed at all over the last few years and where do you see it going in the future?

Jaw Gems: Our style has definetly changed dover the years, mostly volume wise. We started out as a restaurant band and played appropriately for the room but since then we've played bigger and bigger venues while getting louder and louder. I think we're just going to keep developing organically and we'll see what happens.

Joann: What song do you each enjoy playing the most (original or cover)?

Jaw Gems: One of my favorite songs we play is called 'Graymalkin' from our last album 'Blades Plural,' Its a feel good song and the song came about when we were really honing in our sound.
